OUR HISTORY
Our office was founded in Middletown over 75 years ago by George W. Palmer, OD and has remained true to his vision of treating our patients like family. The Middletown office moved several times over those 75 years and finally relocated to our new expanded facility in East Hampton in 2021. The Palmer Eyecare Center with Jeffrey M. Palmer, OD, and now with Martin Hellman, OD is the area's oldest, private optometric practice and family eyecare center.
The photo is from an awards dinner in 2001 when Dr. George Palmer was honored with a 60-year membership plaque from the American Optometric Association in recognition of his years of dedicated service to his patients and the profession. Dr. Jeffrey Palmer received a 25-year membership plaque at that same meeting.

OUR PLEDGE TO YOU
Our mission is to safeguard our patients' vision throughout their lives.
Our motto is "We Solve Vision Problems". Many times, our patients don't even know they have a vision problem so it is up to us to identify the problem and solve it. We change lives for the better every day.
Medical eye problems can be devastating as we age. Cataracts and glaucoma are treatable if identified early. Macular degeneration can lead to functional blindness if not caught early. We diagnose, treat and refer to sub-specialists when necessary. Systemic medical conditions can have recognizable eye manifestations. We can diagnose diabetes, hypertension and even brain tumors and increased intracranial pressure by looking at the back of your eye during a comprehensive eye exam. Annual optometric care from the eye doctors at the Palmer Eyecare Center safeguards your vision and can save your life.
Our ongoing commitment is to always deliver state-of-the-art care. Whether we correct your vision problem with eyeglasses, contact lenses or LASIK/PRK laser correction, you can be assured that you will have the clearest, most comfortable vision attainable. Some of the newest treatment technologies have to do with optimizing the binocular visual perception needed for appreciating the effects of 3D movies and video gaming while protecting your eyes from dangerous wavelengths of light that are given off by LED displays.

The foundation of comfortable vision is based on the precise measurements of the eye during an eye exam by your doctor, something NEVER delegated to a technician.
We take the time to carefully examine our patients' eyes and explain the results and treatment options to them. In an era when managed care is dictating speedy exams and cheap products or at a time when online websites have no professional oversight or guidance at all, we've maintained our old-style, high quality doctor's office environment. Patients are assured that they are never rushed and their complete satisfaction is our goal.
We are privileged to have been entrusted to safeguard the vision of many tens of thousands of area residents for the past 75 years. For generations, patients have trusted our decisions and our products. We stand behind them unequivocally. Your parents and grandparents and great-grandparents may have gotten their eyes examined by us and their eyeglasses or contact lenses from us. Call for an appointment and find out why.
